The raid on the Federal Armory in Harper's Ferry, Virginia, began on October 16, 1859. Brown took the army that he gathered up, consisting of both white and black men. He had hopes that this raid would lay structures for a slave revolt. His army was made up of 22 men including most of his children. His daughter, Annie, acted as a lookout during the attack. He led this army down into Harper's Ferry, killing the citizens who tried to stop them. Owen Brown led an army to kidnap Colonel Lewis Washington, a descendant of George Washington. Brown's army went to Harper's Ferry looking for firearms and supplies. During the raid two of his children were killed. President Buchanan dispatched a militia that was led by Robert E. Lee. Brown's forces were forced back into a barn. After some time of fighting, Brown's army was low on ammunition and supplies. There were many dead at this time. He had chances in his attack to back out, but he didn't. Brown fought along with his men, but was eventually captured and sentenced to death. He is seen as a brave martyr because of this.
