Brown was born on May 9, 1800, in Torrington, Connecticut. He was born to Ruth Mills and Owen Brown. His father was a stark abolitionist and he grew up as a Calvinist. They were extremely religious, and his father even helped runaway slaves as part of the underground railroad. This would affect Brown's attitiude and beliefs during his life. Brown was a businessman and was married twice. After his businesses failed, he turned to what he truly believed in: freeing slaves. Brown would be an important member of the Underground Railroad, meeting famous figures such as Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass along the way. Brown would move his family from state to state, living in both New York and Ohio, before moving to Kansas. It was in Kansas that Brown first achieved fame for his actions.
